Invalid banknotes

You can exchange the banknotes at one of Danmarks Nationalbank's three banknote exchange points run by FOREX in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen.

The last chance is 31 May 2026. After that, the notes will be worthless.

Private individuals can exchange up to kr. 5,000 for new banknotes. You can also choose to have the money deposited in your bank account. Amounts greater than kr. 5,000 will be transferred to your bank account. If you hand in money on behalf of a company, it will always be paid into the company's bank account.

You must always bring a completed exchange form and documentation, regardless of whether you want to exchange banknotes for new cash or deposit them into an account. See the top of the page for limits, deadlines and what documentation you need to bring with you.

Private individuals can exchange a maximum of kr. 5,000 to new banknotes. You can also choose to have the money deposited in your bank account. If you hand in more than kr. 5,000 the money will be transferred to your bank account. If you hand in money on behalf of a company, it will always be transferred to the company's bank account. 

You must always bring a completed exchange form and documentation regardless of whether you wish to exchange to new banknotes or have them deposited to your bank account.

Danmarks Nationalbank has to process the transfer to your accounts manually. This includes handling the banknotes and money laundering checks. You can therefore expect a processing time after you have handed in the money and documentation. Once Danmarks Nationalbank has processed the deposit, the money will be transferred.   

Danmarks Nationalbank and FOREX do not charge a fee for exchanging the banknotes that will become invalid. 

If the money is to be transferred to your bank account, Danmarks Nationalbank will pay the amount 1 to 1 in Danish kroner without charging a fee. However, be aware that in some cases your local bank may charge a fee for receiving the money, which is not covered by Danmarks Nationalbank. The amount received may therefore be minus any fees from your own bank.

When transferring to a foreign account, the transaction is generally converted into a currency other than Danish kroner, which may involve exchange fees. Exchange fees and any transaction costs are borne by the recipient.

31 May 2026 is the last day you can use Danmarks Nationalbank's banknote exchange points. After that, 1000-krone and older-series banknotes will be worthless.  

Until 31 May 2025, you can pay with the banknotes that will become invalid in shops or deposit them in your bank account. After that date, you can only exchange them at one of Danmarks Nationalbank's three banknote exchange points located in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen. You must attend in person, meaning that no one else can exchange the money on your behalf. Before showing up, you need to fill out and print an exchange form, which you can find at FOREX website.

No. It is only possible to hand in your own banknotes, and banknotes must be handed in personally at one of Danmarks Nationalbank's three banknote exchange points operated by FOREX in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen.

Yes, if the banknotes are amongst those that are no longer legal tender. But there must be more than 50 per cent of each banknote remaining. If you have 50 per cent or less of a banknote, it is not valid and the exchange point will not accept it.

Danmarks Nationalbank has decided that the maximum amount that can be exchanged is kr. 5,000. This is primarily due to the risk of money laundering, which increases as the amount increases.

If you have more than kr. 5,000, the amount will be transferred to your bank account. You need to fill out a form and bring documentation before you arrive at the banknote exchange point. Read more about forms and documentation requirements at the top of the page.

You can have the money transferred to your bank account. You will need to fill out an exchange form, bring documentation and attend one of the 3 banknote exchange points in person.

Once the money has been transferred, you can go to your own bank and withdraw it as cash or withdraw the amount at an ATM.

No. There is no upper limit to the amount or number of times you can use the banknote exchange points. However, you must be able to prove where you got the money from in order to exchange the notes via the banknote exchange points. Read more about documentation requirements at the top of the page.

If you are redeeming more than kr. 50,000, you must contact the banknote exchange point at nationalbanken@forexvaluta.dk before showing up.

In collaboration with the Faroese and Greenlandic banks, Danmarks Nationalbank has made it possible for Greenlandic and Faroese citizens to exchange banknotes at their own bank between 1 June 2025 and 31 May 2026. That is, up to one year after the banknotes became invalid as a means of payment in shops.

If you are a customer of GrønlandsBANKEN or Bankivik (Tusass) in Greenland, you can continue to exchange the banknotes at your own bank up to and including Friday 29 May 2026. You can also use Danmarks Nationalbank's three banknote exchange points in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen up to and including 31 May 2026.

After 31 May 2026, the notes will be worthless.

Yes. Once you have visited a banknote exchange point in person, it will be possible to transfer money to your foreign bank account. You must provide all relevant information as specified on the exchange form available at the top of the page.

When transferring to a foreign account, your bank may charge a fee for receiving the funds as well as for converting the amount into a currency that your bank can accept. Such currency conversion may involve fees, which will be deducted from the transferred amount.

No. Personal attendance is required if you want to use Danmarks Nationalbank's banknote exchange points.
